Iron metabolism in the cobalt-polycythemic rat.

چکیده
Although the finding that cobalt can produce a polycythemia in the rat, is well known (l), the mechanism of the hematopoietic action is still obscure. Orten (2) measured the serum bilirubin concentration of normal and cobalt-polycythemic rats, from which he concluded that passive accumulation of red blood cells as a result of a diminished rate of destruction did not occur. Copp (3) found that in rats given 0.1 mg. of cobalt daily the uptake of radioiron in the blood after intraperitoneal administration, as well as the per cent of the dose present in the blood at 24 hours, was almost four times as great as in the control rats. The present study was undertaken to measure the amount of iron utilized per day for red blood cell formation in cobalt-polycythemic rats and the time required for the maturation of the red blood cell in the bone marrow in a manner similar to that which Huff and coworkers (4) used in clinical investigation.

Studies on iron-protein metabolism with radioiron (Fe-55 and Fe-59).
Heath and Patek (1937) (1), Hahn (1937) (2), and other Coworkers revealed that the reviews of the field of iron metabolism were an important key to body processes. As a vital constituent of mammalian body cells, iron plays a role in the oxidative function of heme proteins (Hemoglobin, Cytochrome and Catalase) and in the vasodepressor function of ferritin. Much of our recently acquired informati...
متن کاملThe anemia of infection. XI. The effect of turpentine and cobalt on the absorption of iron by the rat.
In a previous’report (1) from this laboratory it was demonstrated that by the simultaneous administration of cobalt the anemia associated with inflammation, as produced by the injection of turpentine, was not only prevented from developing but polycythemia was produced instead. In Paper X of this series (2) it was demonstrated that the absorption of iron from the gastrointestinal tract was decr...
متن کاملBlood doping by cobalt. Should we measure cobalt in athletes?
BACKGROUND Blood doping is commonplace in competitive athletes who seek to enhance their aerobic performances through illicit techniques. PRESENTATION OF THE HYPOTHESIS Cobalt, a naturally-occurring element with properties similar to those of iron and nickel, induces a marked and stable polycythemic response through a more efficient transcription of the erythropoietin gene. TESTING THE HYPO...
متن کاملEffect of Household Water Treatment on the Concentration of Heavy Metals of Drinking Water in Ahvaz City
Background: Some metals play an important role in biological reactions and metabolism of human body. Low and high concentrations of these elements can cause diseases and poisoning. This study was carried out in order to investigate the concentration of metals in inlet and outlet water of households in Ahvaz city, Iran in 2018. Materials and Methods: This was a cross-sectional descriptive stud...
متن کاملStudies on the metabolism of iron-containing proteins with radioactive carbon and iron.
Hemoglobin, of the iron-containing compounds, has received the most attention because of its quantitative importance and ease of isolation. In contrast, tracer studies with radioiron of ferritin, cytochrome c, and myoglobin, which are more difficult to isolate, have been less numerous. The uptake of Cl4 by these proteins has received almost no study. Of particular interest in relation to the pr...
